I'm playing an EW run using JSawyer's mod so my carry weight is severely limited.
With strong back, I have 125#. I'll eventually go for pack rat and/or burden to bear, but those will be much later in the game.Weapon-wise, I just got (level 9) a fully modded laser rifle for general sniping and long range use. I'll probably put it away when I get the holorifle, which I'd then put away for the YCS. Up until this point I've just been using the plasma pistol (now fully modded) you get at the very beginning from the guy who wants you to 'rescue his girlfriend'. It's served me well, but I'm wondering if I should change it up.
Stick with the Laser Rifle honestly. Fully modded, a Laser Rifle is more than capable of beating the entire game, because it gets two mods that increase its damage per shot. Upgrade to a LAER when you can, and learn how to make weapon repair kits. But, if you are dead-set on using Plasma, there is no substitute for the Q-35. Everything else has too slow of projectiles without mods and/or uses too much ammo to be worth it.The only thing that comes close is a fully modded Plasma Pistol.Regular Plasma Rifles are slow and inefficient.
They really aren't very good in NV at all.Plasma Defenders are a decent, but I find them to be more of a side-grade to Plasma Pistols, than an actual upgrade. I don't care for them. Lasers are more ammo efficient when fully modded. Even without mods, they are pretty much the same as a Plasma Rifle.Unmodded Lasers do 22 damage per MFC.Modded Lasers can do 32.5 damage per MFC.Plasmas do 23.5 damage per MFC. That's not even including all the shots you would be missing because of the projectile speed and lower accuracy. On top of that, Lasers get access to a scope, and can function like a shotgun in VATS.Q-35 is the only one that is more ammo efficent than a Laser Rifle, at 40 damage per MFC. So, it's really up to if you consider that 7.5 extra damage per shot is worth all the downsides that comes with it. Personally, I don't.The combination of projectile speed, decreased accuracy, and a much smaller magazine is too much for the extra damage.
Just my anecdote, but when I did a sneaky Laser Rifle playthrough, I only ran into that problem against the BoS team you encounter during Veronica's quest.I wasn't even using special ammo types, either. I imagine that with optimized or max charge cells, I wouldn't have had as much trouble.Deathclaws were a small annoyance until I got Meltdown. Once you get that, Laser Rifles essentially become Hitscan Plasma Grenades. Just remember to target the babies, and the chain reaction can wipe out an entire Deathclaw pack with one well place shot.
I probably had some other perks that boosted my damage as well.
The following section is from. To modify, please.Plasma rifles or plasma casters are high tech weapons firing superheated bolts of plasma, powered by either or, which find numerous applications in military and industrial fields. The bolts form into toroids in the plasma chamber, which are then sent down a superconducting barrel, propelled by, and in some models stabilized by electromagnetic claws upon exiting it.
The primary damage mechanism of plasma rifles is thermal transfer, causing serious burns to soft targets and melting hard ones. In extreme cases, the plasma can cause spontaneous dissolution of the target, including separation of soft tissues from hard ones or wholesale molecular destabilization that turns the target into a viscous green fluid.Initially, the weapon was a bulky, industrial plasma caster, manufactured by; while it performed admirably, it was expensive and required specialized training to use. However, later developments for the would lead to a more compact design that was cheaper to produce and easier to train for, perfectly suited for urban warfare. This plasma rifle is a lightweight urban warfare weapon created as part of a desire to replace the aging design. This design was produced and fielded in number prior to the of. This however was not the end of the design nor manufacture of this weapon platform.
